This project was commissioned by a friend of my mother on behalf of her employer. She wanted a logo for her therapeutic massage business that conveyed healing and new beginnings, and also included elements such as the oak tree and sunlight breaking through the branches. However, she didn't want the usual tree with a rounded top and symmetrical branches.
I looked up photos of many different kinds of oak trees, focusing on those that were twisted and old, and used their shape to imply motion, and the grain of the bark to imply muscles stretching up and outward. I drew up a lot of variations on these themes, and intentionally included a few that I knew were outside of what had been requested. I did this because often this helps shake loose new ideas that the client might not have considered. In this case, it was helpful in figuring out the silhouette, the shape of the border, and the font that I ultimated crafted myself in Illustrator.
The client was incredibly pleased with the logo, as was I, and put it into regular use.
